Could training with a friend be beneficial or detrimental?
Some people prefer to train on their own, some people need a friend there with them. There are no right or wrong ways about it, it all comes down to personal preference. However if your thinking of going to the gym with a friend there may be a few things you need to consider first.
Is your friend/partner trying to achieve the same goals as you? It would almost be pointless having a training partner if your training for the London Marathon and they are training for a bodybuilding competition. Make sure you both have the same goals when training.
- Motivation. If you go to the gym with a partner at the moment do they motivate you to do better, do they push you on your sets, or are they moaning about how much it hurts, about how the weather is outside and on their phone checking social media and not paying much attention to the task in hand. Make sure if you go with someone they are there (and you there for them) pushing and spurring each other on! All too often people just go through the motion on the gym floor.
- Sometimes its better to work to your own timetable, plug your headphones in, switch off from the outside world for an hour and crack on. Even if you go to the gym with a friend and tell them you'll see them in an hour... look after number 1... YOU!
